The tool ships with a compact, hand-curated thesaurus of common English words grouped into synonym sets. When you look up a single word, it lowercases your input, strips surrounding punctuation, and searches every set for a match. If the word appears in a set, all the other members of that set are returned as clickable synonym chips. Because the dictionary is bundled directly into the page, lookups are instant and work completely offline.
Sentence rephrasing uses rule-based lexical substitution. The rewriter tokenizes your text while preserving spaces and punctuation, then walks token by token. For each alphabetic token it computes a lowercase key and checks the thesaurus. When a match exists, it picks a replacement from the candidate pool and restores the original capitalization pattern — an all-caps word stays all-caps, a Title-Cased word keeps its leading capital, and everything else is written lowercase. The selection rule is deterministic per shuffle: an index counter advances through the candidate list so repeated words get varied alternatives instead of the same one every time, and the "Shuffle" button reseeds that counter for a fresh rewrite.
You control the aggression. With Aggressive substitution on, every word that has any synonym is replaced; turn it off and the rewriter only swaps roughly every other eligible word for a lighter touch. The keep short words option protects function words like "and" or "the" from being altered, and highlight changes marks each substituted word so you can review the rewrite at a glance. No text ever leaves your device.
Lexical substitution is a starting point, not a final draft. After generating a rewrite, read it aloud and fix any swap that changed the meaning — synonyms are rarely perfect equivalents. Combine word-level changes with sentence-structure edits (reordering clauses, splitting long sentences) for genuinely original phrasing.
